Students will step back into the 1800’s & experience a taste of the old west.  Our Field Trip Program meets three of the teaching standards  history, math and social studies.

4th. GRADE & UP PROGRAM

STOCKYARD & LIVERY STABLE
We welcome your entire group to the town of El Paso de Robles of 1889 where you will learn some history about the migration West to the California Gold Fields. You will see a few of the different breeds of horses that were used to bring people West. Group then tours the stables & learns the function of the tie stalls & how this type of horse facilities was used to handle saddle horses & buggy horses.

HORSE DRAWN HAY WAGON RIDE
Group takes a horse drawn wagon ride, experiencing the way travel was in the past. While one group is on the wagon ride, the other group will draw & design their own town.

CARRIAGE BARN TOUR  & HORSE DRAWN FARM EQUIPMENT
Group will view the different types of horse drawn vehicles used to open up the American West.   See the horse drawn farm equipment used for farming in the early 1900’s & that is still being used here at Harris Stage Lines today.

HOOP STICK RACE A game of skill played by children in the 1800’s with a steel tire off of a wagon wheel.  Game is to see who can roll it the furthest.

PRAIRIE DOLL
A doll that was made by both boys & girls of all ages sitting in the back of a covered wagon coming west. We supply the material for every child to make their own doll to keep. Children would make these dolls out of strips of material left over from clothing, nothing was ever wasted. This was a good way to pass the time while traveling in their wagons.

GOLD PANNING
Walk down to the riverbed & pan for gold. We provide the pans and students may keep any river rubies and gold they find! They will pan in a sluice box if the riverbed is to dry.

Entire group gathers on Coach House lawn area where they can have their lunch.

Did you know, California was the stagecoach capital of our nation from 1847 to 1910?

Our program is an educational presentation designed to fit into the California teaching standards of history. “The history of  the stagecoach used as transportation to bring mail & people West, prior to the trains & automobile of today .”
We bring to your school in a semi-truck & 51ft. trailer the stagecoach & horses. They will learn about the trials & tribulations that our forefathers faced traveling in that time period.  Decisions they made determined the success of their trip.
Travel of today is not even given a thought, pack a suitcase, bored a train, bus, car, airplane & go!

“The more you know about the past the better prepared you are for the future.”
